The Laptop given by our TN Government has nothing to blame. It was configured to give students a great experience in education. It lacks a DVD-RW/DVD drive as a part to prevent students from diverting from studies. It basically has a Linux BOSS and Windows 7 Ultimate OS. 

HCL

Review : (HCL)

Display:
          
              Has a HD standard LCD 14 " inch Display with 1366 x 768 pixels with 16:9 ratio Wide Screen which is equivalent to 1280x720 with 16:9 ratio Wide Screen. You Might Experience little Glare while viewing at a different angle but still It is a good Display.

Processor:
          
              Everyone might think AMD is weak ! But you are wrong this AMD Turion x2 is equivalent to Intel Dual Core except for the cache memories. Still it has a faster clock speed (2.6GHz) than the Intel Pentium's 2.3 GHz. Ideal for mid range computing. But Gaming in this machine might be a head ache but dont lose hope yet this thing can play games which where released before 2010 (Tested Major games by me) cos it is backed up by a GPU of 1 GB of video memory. Trust me this AMD has lot of potential.

Main Memory (RAM) :
          
            It has a 2 GB DDR3 RAM which can be upgraded to 8 GB at the price of Rs.1200 - Rs.1500. Its Clocked around 1060 MHz which really fast ! but there are still 1330 MHz one which you can get if you love multitasking. Running on the 2 GB is ideal if you are not a gamming fan or Multi tasker lol get 4 GB and you will love this Laptop.Want to know more about increasing RAM Click here. (I currently Have 6 GB RAM)

Hard Disk:
          
            They shrunk the Hard Disk capacity from 320 GB to 160 GB this year thats little disappointing but we can blame it cos its FREE.If you are wondering "I have only 120 GB, where the hell is the other 40 GB! " thats cos Linux BOSS 4.0 occupies 40 GB :P if you want to know how to get that 40 GB back and how to remove LINUX BOSS Click Here. Its a standard SATA drive which can be replaced with a new hard disk with higher capacity but who wants to lose a original Windows 7 Pro.

Video Memory (Graphics Card) :
            
            It has a onboard memory of 1 GB ATI Radeon HD 4520 which is awesome. This is almost pretty basic but still you can play many games if you upgrade your RAM to 4 GB. Totally this one is Awesome i just tested some major games like GTA IV which ran smoothly with Medium Graphics Config.

Operating System:
            
            The laptop is preinstalled with Windows 7 Pro & LINUX BOSS 4.0. Lets start with linux, LINUX BOSS is really old but has lots of educational softs I am not interested in LINUX so i just deleted it. Want to delete yours Click here. Now windows, This thing has a Windows 7 Pro which is freaking awesome and the best part, it is original so you can get free antivirus from Microsoft and more updates, and as it is ultimate all softwares are supported, people who think WINDOWS XP SOFTS dont work in Windows 7 are wrong Windows 7 32 bit now supports 90 % of Win XP softs so go get used to Win 7 and you will love it.

Battery:
            
              Has a brilliant battery that lasts 3 Hrs. Its a 6 cell Standard Li-Ion battery with 4400 mha which is lower than that of lenovo's 47 Whr but uses less power than lenovo so Both batteries are equivalent.

Weight:
            
              Weight is not a matter if you dont travel with your Laptop or if you dont use it on your lap, but some colleges ask students to bring the Laptop to college everyday so weight does matters. Lenovo weighs about 2.8 Kg and HCL weighs just 2.6 Kg but still 200 g does not make any major difference.
Speakers:    
                
                Speakers are not loud enough but its better than nothing. There is a software to boost Audio by a lot to download that soft click here. or you could just use a Headphone or Earphone :P

Other:

            The laptop comes with 67 GB of installed educational software and books which might be useful for some and useless for others.It has lots of contents and i am sure it will be quite usefull for lots of people before deleting any of it take a look and see if anything could be useful for you. HCL has a slot for Webcam and a space for DVD Drive and has a connecter for it(Lenovo does not have DVD connector) many students have attached DVD Drives in HCL. • Speakers are not loud(Can be made loud with this soft or by using External Speakers(Rs.450++)/Headphones/Earphones).
• Partitions are not organised(Click here to see how to change partition spaces).
• Adding stuffs to your laptop voids warranty.
• The body is more platic and the rear side is almost open so must behandled with care.

            I did not add the lack of webcam,DVD Drive,Wifi to cons cos they were purposely not added to prevent students from misusing the laptop, but they can't stop us lol Click here and learn more.Its the best laptop you can ever get for free so Use it for your studies and whatever you do dont sell and waste it. Gamming is not the best but you can play Games released before 2010 without lag.But Pentium is little outdated.

Main Memory (RAM) :
          
            It has a 2 GB DDR2 RAM which can be upgraded to 4 GB at the price of Rs.1200 - Rs.1500. I guess this should be clocked around 600 MHz - 800 MHz. Hard Disk:
          
            The hard disk capacity is 320 GB higher than the HCL's 160 GB. If you are wondering "I have only 220 GB, where the hell is the other 100 GB!" thats cos Linux BOSS 4.0 occupies 100 GB :P if you want to know how to get that 100 GB back and how to remove LINUX BOSS Click Here. Its a standard SATA drive which can be replaced with a new hard disk with higher capacity but who wants to lose a original Windows 7 Ultimate.

Video Memory (Graphics Card) :
            
            It has an onboard memory of 896 MB Intel HD Graphics which is enough to play games that where released before 2010. This is almost pretty basic so dont experiment this machine with brand new games. Totally this one has enough potential for mid ranged gamming,video editing and other mid ranged stuffs.

Andriod-x86 is an unofficial project to port Google’s Android operating system to run on devices with x86 processors… like the ones made by Intel and AMD. In other words, it lets you run Android on your laptop or desktop PC.
The team has released a new build based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and while it’s a bit rough around the edges, Android-x86 4.2 does let you run Android and install some Android apps on a PC.
I took it for a spin on the Chromebook Pixel.

The Chromebook Pixel isn’t the ideal device for this sort of test drive — the touchpad and touchscreen aren’t supported so I had to plug in a mouse, and the notification bar and mouse look tiny on the laptop’s 2560 x 1700 pixel display — but apps like the web browser look great.
Android-x86 4.2 features a Linux 3.8 kernel, support for hardware-accelerated graphics using Intel and AMD graphics chips, and support for multitouch (if you have a supported touchscreen, WiFi-, and other hardware.
But this build doesn’t support Bluetooth or suspend and resume, and many apps available in the Play Store won’t run on a device with an x86 processor.
Some apps will run — but with mixed results. For instance, Google Play Movies worked just fine, but when I tried running the Dolphin web browser it rotated my screen to portrait mode (which is awkward to use on a laptop), and the only way I could switch back to landscape orientation was to install a third party screen rotate app.
Still, if you want to give Android a try on your laptop, there’s no simpler way than downloading Android-x86 and installing it on a bootable USB flash drive. You can always pop out the flash drive and reboot into Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, or what have you if you don’t like it.
I used the LinuxLive USB Creator tool to prepare a bootable flash drive.

Can IDM and uTorrent Cause Hard Disk Crash?

Internet Download Manager and uTorrent are the most used softwares to download content from the internet because these apps support resumable downloads, it means you can stop your download anytime and can resume it without losing the previously downloaded data. But, do you know, using softwares which provide download resume feature can cause damage to your hard disk and can decrease the life and performance of your hard disk?
Yes, it's true. I personally noticed this thing. I have my experimental PCs and I noticed that the PC in which I was using IDM and uTorrent to download content from internet were started showing Blue Screen of Death error, hanging problems and slow access of the hard disk. But the PC in which I didn't use IDM or uTorrent was running perfectly and even the hard disk of that PC is 8 years old, but still it's working perfectly.

REASON:

Actually, hard disk is divided in Tracks, Sectors and Clusters. Whenever any data is being downloaded, it is stored in the clusters. The data, which is being downloaded via browser, or whenever you copy data from any external media, it is stored in your hard disk's clusters. Normally, when we download data using a browser, it downloads the data stores the data in the clusters in an arranged manner.
But when we download the data using Internet Download Manager or uTorrent, they download the data in small parts or packets which are stored in the clusters in an unarranged manner, which disturbs the distribution of clusters. After downloading all the packets of data, IDM and uTorrent join them to make a single file, and that data's clusters are not in an arranged and optimized manner. So, hard disk gets fragmented. If we regularly use these apps to download data, our hard disk gets fragmented and starts showing errors and becomes unstable. Thus, our hard disk gets crashed soon because of the damaged clusters.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

It will be best that you always use direct browser download method, and avoid using download managers. Use download managers only when you are downloading a very important data and you want it to be resumable. In this way, you can save your hard disk for a long time. But I am suggesting you some ways to keep your hard disk healthy and damage free.

1. DEFRAG YOUR HARD DISK ONCE IN THREE MONTHS:

If the data in your hard disk gets fragmented then you can defrag it using some tools. In windows, you can get the default defragmenter by going Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk

Defragmenter.

But I'll suggest you to use any 3rd party software, like AVG PC TUNEUP or TUNEUP UTILITIES to defrag your hard disk. These third party softwares have more powerful defragmenter and they can defrag your hard disk in a better way than windows does.

Warning: If you do frequent defragmentations, your hard disk may damage more fastly due to wear and tear effect. So, don't run defragmentations at short intervals. A gap of at least three months must be taken between two defragmentations.  

2. FIX DISK ERROS WEEKLY:

To keep your hard disk safe from crashes and to make your operating system stable, you must check your hard disk for errors and fix them. You can use windows default Disk Check utility (Normally called CHKDSK when used in command prompt). To check your hard disk errors and fix them, just open my computer. Now, right click on the drive which your want to be checked for errors. Now click PROPERTIES. A window will appear which shows drive properties, click TOOLS tab, then under Error-Checking option, click Check Now button. Disk Check utility will appear, select Automatically fix file system errors and click Start button.

You can use AVG PC TUNEUP Utility also. This software has an intelligent disk check utility.

3. KEEP AT LEAST 20% SPACE FREE IN HARD DISK:

Always keep 20% of the hard disk space free. This will increse the access speed of hard disk and increase theperformance of the hard disk.

4. ALWAYS USE TURN OFF BEFORE UNPLUGGING YOUR PC FROM POWER:

Before switching off your pc, always turn it off by going to Start > Turn Off. This will safe your data from any loss and error will not be created in your hard disk and your operating system will be stable.

5. RECOVERY OF BAD SECTORS:

If your hard disk is not showing any improvements after trying these optimizations, then you must check for Bad Sectors and fix them. Most of the times, this feature proves to be life saving for important data during hard disk crash.To start recovery of bad sectors, just follow the steps to open windows disk error check utility and before clicking Start button, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Then click Start button. When you willrestart your pc, windows will check and fix the bad sectors in hard disk. You can use AVG PC TUNEUP Utility for better options.

Sony has introduced a new tablet by name Xperia Tablet Z, a 10.1inch Android tablet which is thinner than the Apple iPad mini.
